2020 Voice Essay: Afrofuturism vs Africanfuturism in Black Panther and Midnight Robber

For a Science Fiction and Fantasy course I took at Purdue, I wrote and recorded a voice essay, mixing podcasting techniques and radio elements. The full voice essay, which you can find on my YouTube channel, examines the literary and societal impact of the film Black Panther directed by Ryan Coogler and the novel Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson. Through examination of these two fictional stories, I attempt to understand the merits of Afrofuturism and Africanfuturism, two emerging literary genres. The term "Afrofuturism" emerged first, and it signifies sci-fi or futurism inspired by black culture. "Africanfuturism" is a term used by Nalo Hopkinson to distinguish a more specific cultural root in African tradition and society. The photo used for this project is by Kenyan photographer Antony Trivet. Here is the link to the full voice essay: https://youtu.be/EwX93qy82Wk
